WEB182. March 26, 2007. Pwdering magnesium or aluminum by ball mill is a real pain, but 50/50 magnalium alloy can be powdered with ease as it is extremely brittle and crumbles in rather mild conditions. Smaller batches can be ground to size by a mortar and pestle.

One general rule is to fill the jar half full of media, and powder until it just covers the media, and leave the rest empty. I don't think anybody here would say milling in a garage is a good idea. There is a lot of ball mill talk on this forum in old threads.

WEBAug 10, 2023 · This isn't a recommendation, just a description of what works for me and my concerns and comforts. My mill jars don't have hidden nooks and crannies. Recall that AP (and any ammonium comps) don't do well with chlorates, ever. Nitrates (KNO 3, Sr (NO 3) 2, BP) will form hygroscopic AN and risk failuresavoid priming with BPlike comps .

I think you'll get composition "stuck" in the donut hole of the nut. use the smallest uniform amount of ball media. the more surface area, the more "grinding" that occurs. fill your mill up half way with media

WEBOct 20, 2012 · To prevent your motor from burning out I would recommend 23lb's lead and 150200g composition per jar. I personally use just over 2Lb's lead and 200g composition with a 1" drive roller in my 3Lb jars on these mills. PERFECT black powder in 2023 hours. With 150g composition in the mill it's perfect in around 14 hours.

I don't know if you're familiar with Lloyd, but he is very well known for his contributions to pyro ball milling, and is the author of the book many pyros consider the ball mill bible. In the article he describes an accident he had while trying to mix magnesium with cabosil using a ball mill with no media.

WEBMar 27, 2015 · As far as placement of your mill, the ideal distance is probably around 150ft or more away from any buildings of any sort. If you can barricade it that's even better (things like sandbags). Just make sure you don't block off air to the motor. When making black powder there is always a chance for it to go off.

They use flash powder for bursting (max 5") They are using ball milled charcoal for their screened mix BP lift. Also KNO3 is milled into very fine powder using flour mill before mixing bp.
